Introduction

This virtual exhibition on Spanish Colonial art was created by students in ARH 270S–Spanish Art, a course taught at the University of Miami in Spring 2018. The students conducted research on Spanish Colonial artworks at the Lowe Art Museum of the University of Miami and are presenting here the results of their research over the course of the semester. Art historical research on the style, iconography, form, historical and art historical context of the pieces was complemented by the creation of 3-D models of the sculptural works. The students designed and created the website used here to display this virtual exhibition. Three themes, Art of the Church, Iconography of the Saints, and Art for the Home and Community categorize the objects according to their original context and function in the colonial Americas.
